Armenia is gearing up to mark the 100th anniversary of the mass killing of Armenians on April 24th. Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their countrymen were killed in what they call a genocide between 1915 and 1917-- as the Ottoman Empire was disintegrating. Turkey rejects that claim, saying that up to 500,000 Armenians were killed after they rose up against their Ottoman rulers and sided with invading Russian troops. During a mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis called the mass killing “a genocide.” Turkey called the statement ‘unacceptable’ and recalled its ambassador to the Vatican.
It is the 40th anniversary of the beginning of Lebanon’s civil war. The conflict primarily lasted for 15 years, with more than 150,000 deaths and an estimated 17,000 missing. Many in the country feel the civil war never ended. A sluggish economy and ongoing violence in Tripoli have raised concerns about widespread sectarianism in Lebanon. The war in Syria has also raised concerns about spillover fighting.
Finally, the United States commemorated the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination with a Day of Remembrance on April 15th. Special exhibitions recall the night Lincoln was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth, as he watched a dramatic performance at Ford’s Theatre. The Newseum has seven editions of the New York Herald on display dated April 15th 1865, revealing the chronology of the assassination, starting with the 2am edition reporting that Lincoln had been shot. Ford’s Theatre commemorated the assassination with a candlelight vigil.
